Full-time employees work for 1659 hours. You have the choice of a 36, 38, or 40-hour working week. This way, you can determine in part how many days’ leave you build up every year.
A large proportion of our people work part-time, to a greater or lesser degree. With your line manager, you can discuss how you wish to divide the number of your working hours over the year (but obviously within the limits and requirements of your position).
We believe it important that you are able to pursue your professional development. Together with your line manager, you can discuss your career and development opportunities. You make joint agreements in the Results-Oriented Working cycle. Time and funding are available for training and retraining for every employee - this has been set down by HU in a professional-enhancement plan. The professional-enhancement plan is the basis for professional development at HU and for the areas or themes of professional development that we regard as important. For example, it states the basic qualifications that lecturers need: HU aims to ensure that all its lecturers have a Master’s degree.
HU also has its own Career Portal, where you can work on your own professional development whenever you wish to deepen or expand the scope of your work. Finally, there are various options for further career supervision, training courses, and additional coaching. All in all, it means you are able to actively and constantly shape your own career at HU.
Salary, pension, and travel expenses
In addition to their salaries, employees annually receive an 8% holiday allowance and an extra month’s salary (the ‘thirteenth month’). Every HU employee is covered by the ABP (the pension fund for employees in the government and education sectors in the Netherlands). HU pays 70% of the premiums. HU employees are entitled to reimbursement for the travel expenses they incur between their homes and work. HU employees receive discounts on a number of train and bus season tickets.
HU operates an HR Employee Self-Service system. This enables you to view your salary slips at any time online, and to update your personal data in the employee administration system. You can also use the system to apply for leave, submit travel expense claims, and request certain regulations and reimbursements.
HU places great importance on sustainability and encourages the use of public transport and cycling among commuters. You can purchase a bicycle at a discount through the NFP (‘national cycle plan’). We also regularly try to secure attractive discounts, for the purchase of electric bicycles, for example.
In addition, employees can benefit from discounts on a complete package of insurance cover, such as collective healthcare insurance, and financial services. These are also available for partners and children living with employees.
